Yoga for Relaxation:
Fall 2023
The feeling of being relaxed, really and truly relaxed, is hard to come by these days.
We live in a stress driven culture that is living through particularly stressful times.
The state of being in hurry, tense and overextended is the norm we all exist within.
But is this healthy? What is the cost of being stressed out for a prolonged period time.
Holding on to stress in our systems for a prolonged period of time has a multitude of well documented effects on our health and wellbeing.
Stress reduces our immune function, impacts our cognitive function (memory and focus), leads to impaired digestion, impacts our hormonal systems, decreases the quality of our sleep and impacts our mood and own sense of health.
Let's face it, stress is here to stay. It is a daily reality that we need to deal with.
So the question becomes, how do we manage the stress?
Yoga is a powerful tool to manage stress.
The integration of breath with movement and intention has been shown to slow the heart rate and reduce other markers associated with being in a stressed state.
Many yogic practices directly support the Vagus nerve (master nerve in the body that regulates between fight or flight and rest and digest state).
In addition, working actively with a physical practice that plays with moving between tension or action and relaxation helps to reprogram the body to let go of stress more easily.
In this 11 week long yoga series we will explore:
Yoga asana work that plays with the relationship between effort, tension, and relaxation.
Somatic awareness practices to help us feel safe and comfortable in the body.
Yoga breath work (pranayama) to support the tone of the Vagus nerve.
Guided mindfulness and relaxation practices.
How the nervous system works and how breath and asana practices can lead to neurological transformations.

Group Practice for Individual Transformation
This fall at Potentials Wellness Center, we will be practicing slowing down and relaxing.
In each class, we will have an opportunity to work on strengthening and stretching the body in a way that supports relaxation.
Throughout the 11-week series, we will explore yoga and other movement practices that will:
- Challenge the body physically to move between tension and relaxation
- Learn breathwork that quickly impacts the brain and nervous system
- Practice somatic exercises that help us feel more aware of our bodies.
- Move through guided relaxation and mindfulness practices that facilitate relaxation and stress reduction.
- Stretch and open areas of the body that commonly hold onto excessive stress.
- Learn tools that we can use in our daily lives to help us manage stress.
- Understand the benefits of different yoga postures
- Set individual goals for practice.
Yoga is an ancient tool that is popular today because the simultaneous benefits of improved balance, strength, flexibility, relaxation and overall well-being that it brings are timeless.
At Potentials, we believe that being clear on why you are doing yoga and making sure you are attuned to that purpose when you practice is the first step in finding real meaning in this ancient discipline.
When we observe most group yoga classes, we see a group of people trying to look like they are doing the same thing as everyone else by creating and holding a pose.
The truth is that the appearance of this external pose is insignificant in the true work of yoga.
The true work of yoga is to discover what is unique in our own bodies (and the rest of us) and to honor it.
We must learn to be comfortable with making modifications that reflect our individuality rather than forcing our bodies to conform.
Learning how to modify yoga to align with your body and your goals is the most fundamental thing for creating a yoga practice that will support health and growth.
Come join us and explore the benefits of developing an individualized practice that is informed by your own goals and needs.
