Come Move with Us

Yoga for Pain, Winter 2023
Pain is an inescapable part of human life. We all deal with little aches and pains associated with aging, exercise, repetitive movements (think typing at a computer) and poor posture. We also can end up dealing with acute pain associated with injury. Sometimes those acute pains don't resolve and become chronic.
Living a more sedentary life and the resulting weakness, tightness and misalignment of the body is another major player in why contemporary humans have pain.
Humans evolved to move a lot! We need to twist, balance, lift, squat, roll and crawl. Ample movement is a major key to having less pain. Yet, when we have pain, movement can be difficult. This can become a Catch-22.
This class is designed to help us learn how to move in safe yet dynamic ways. This means that the movement itself is not painful and there is less pain as you move around in your life as a result of having done the movement.
Each week we will explore a series of movements designed to support the health of a region of the body. We start at the feet and move up the body all the way up to the head, exploring common pain patterns as we go. We will cover everything from foot pain patterns like Achilles tendon problems and plantar fasciitis to tight necks and shoulders to jaw pain and tension headaches.
The class incorporates traditional Hatha yoga (coming from the Viniyoga, Integral Yoga and Iyengar Yoga traditions) in addition to aspects from the Feldenkrais and Egoscue methods of therapeutic movement.
All skill levels are welcome. Multiple options for modification are given throughout the class to allow for more gentle and more challenging alternatives.
Join us in this unique eleven-week program as we improve our understanding of why parts of our bodies hurt and what gentle daily practices we can do to reduce or eliminate those pains.

Group Practice for Individual Transformation
Yoga is an ancient tool that is popular today because the simultaneous benefits of improved balance, strength, flexibility, relaxation and overall well-being that it brings are timeless.
At Potentials, we believe that being clear on why you are doing yoga and making sure you are attuned to that purpose when you practice is the first step in finding real meaning in this ancient discipline.
When we observe most group yoga classes, we see a group of people trying to look like they are doing the same thing as everyone else by creating and holding a pose.
The truth is that the appearance of this external pose is insignificant in the true work of yoga.
The true work of yoga is to discover what is unique in our own bodies (and the rest of us) and to honor it.
We must learn to be comfortable with making modifications that reflect our individuality rather than forcing our bodies to conform.
Learning how to modify yoga to align with your body and your goals is the most fundamental thing for creating a yoga practice that will support health and growth.
Come join us and explore the benefits of developing an individualized practice that is informed by your own goals and needs.
This winter, at Potential Wellness Center, we will explore the role yoga can play in reducing or eliminating common pain patterns.
In each class, we will have the opportunity to explore a different region of the body and the common pain, dysfunction and injury patterns that effect it.
Throughout the 11-week series, we will explore yoga practices that can be used to address specific patterns of pain and improve our overall understanding of biomechanics and body alignment.
